Tom Bower says the reason King Charles has not stripped Meghan Markle’s titles yet is not hesitation alone, but simple royal caution. According to Bower, the King is trapped between avoiding a politically ugly move and keeping the peace inside a family already under strain.
Bower’s argument is that removing the Sussex titles would look personal rather than principled, especially if it were done while Charles is still on the throne. He says the King would only move if pressured by Prince William, and even then, it would need to be handled carefully because the monarchy risks appearing vindictive.
That caution matters because Charles has spent years trying to avoid a total public rupture with Harry and Meghan. He has repeatedly chosen containment over confrontation, allowing the Sussexes to remain attached to their titles even as criticism of the couple has intensified. In Bower’s view, that restraint is less about approval and more about avoiding a fight that would damage the institution.
The bigger issue, according to Bower, is what happens when William becomes king. He suggests the future monarch may be far more willing to take decisive action, especially after the precedent set by Andrew’s removal from royal standing. That is why he describes Harry and Meghan as being on borrowed time.
