Among the British royal family's dazzling collection of jewels, few pieces carry as much history and emotional significance as the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara.
Famously worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, the sparkling headpiece has become one of the most recognizable royal tiaras in the world. Today, it is most often seen on Catherine, Princess of Wales, while Queen Camilla has never publicly worn it.
The tiara was originally commissioned by Queen Mary in 1914 and was inspired by a design owned by her grandmother. Decades later, Queen Elizabeth II loaned the tiara to Diana following her marriage to then-Prince Charles in 1981. Diana wore it frequently at official engagements, state banquets, and overseas tours, helping cement its place in royal history. Its elegant arches and dangling pearls became closely associated with her image.
Following Diana's death in 1997, the tiara was returned to the royal collection and remained out of sight for many years. In 2015, Catherine made her first public appearance wearing the famous jewel, delighting royal fans who saw it as a tribute to her late mother-in-law. Since then, Kate has worn it at several major royal occasions, further strengthening its connection to the Princess of Wales.
Royal experts suggest that Camilla's decision not to wear the Lover's Knot Tiara is likely intentional. The piece remains deeply linked to Diana in the public imagination, and wearing it could invite unwanted comparisons. Instead, Camilla typically chooses other historic tiaras from the royal vault that have stronger associations with queens and consorts.
